Embracing the “Terrible Too’s”

Too much to do. Too many appointments to make. Too much to spend. Too much being asked of me. Too many crazy people. Too little time...

Perhaps one of the most incorrectly-quoted Biblical principals says, “God will never give you more than you can handle.” This sentiment, while perhaps temporarily analgesic to the overwhelmed mind and heart, is wrong. Dead wrong. In fact, scripture teaches us the exact opposite of that- He does give us more than we can handle. On a regular basis. What is scripturally accurate is that He invites us to trade our heavy burdens for His weight, which is refreshingly light. He invites us to cast all our cares on Him. He bids us find rest in His presence.

The truth is, if He only gave me what I could handle, I would have no perceived need of Him. That’s a dangerous place to be. I don’t want to be there and I don’t want my kids to see me there. So overwhelming situations, trials, and general too-muchness are necessary to keep me connected to Him. It’s in that connectedness that I’ll find peace. I’ll find hope. I’ll find healing for my brokenness. Today, I choose to embrace the storm. I choose to embrace too-much. I choose to embrace my weakness so that I can experience His strength. Today, I choose healing. If you’re in a season of “too,” may I suggest that’s exactly where He needs you to be? In His love He has given you too much...so that His strength will be made perfect in your weakness. I pray you, also, choose to embrace the “terrible too’s” today.
